OATS AS DIETARY FIBERS
OATS AS DIETARY FIBERS
Oats contain more soluble fibres than any other grain. Because of this there is a complete and slower digestion with extended sensation of fullness, reduces constipation. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has finalized its rule expanding the sources of oat beta glucan soluble fibre that can carry the health claim for lower risk of heart diseases.
It is said that half cup of oat bran gives 4.4g of dietary fibres required by the body. Soluble fibers, like oats, reduce cholesterol by interfering with the absorption of bile acids in the intestine causing them to be excreted rather than being taken up into the blood stream. Since bile acids are made from LDL, "bad" cholesterol in the body then removes LDL cholesterol from the blood and takes it to the liver in order to make new bile acids to replace those lost in the stool.
They are often added in to baked goods such as biscuits, cereal bars and flapjacks and can also be used to make a non dairy milk substitute. The soluble fibre which is very important for the body for digestion is not obtained in good amount especially in children because they will go for fast foods instead of healthy vegetables. A cup of oat meal a day will substitute not only the dietary fibres required but also gives lot of vitamins, minerals, calcium, magnesium and other micro nutrients. The fibers of oat also help in protecting vision of our eyes. Its mainly because of the purification of blood.
