OLIVE OIL FOR COOKING

olive2

Olive is a type of a fruit and the oil extracted from it is used for cooking all over the world. Olive oil does not require any chemical treatment during the process of its extraction where as almost all other do require. And hence, no refining is required for olive oil before consuming.

Olive oil is used for dressing salads, frying and cooking. Its ingredients give the dish an authentic Mediterranean flavor. It is best suited for any kind of food. It goes with pizzas and pasta. Its good with soups and sauce. In Spain, it is also used to cook sweets. The food fried or cooked with olive oil contains less fat content in them and hence prevents obesity. This is mainly because it forms a crust around the food and prevents the food by absorbing more oil. It is also said that usage of olive oil in regular food diet prevents breast cancer.

Olive oil has to be stored properly. Air, moisture and heating makes the oil turn rancid and when such rancid oil is used for cooking, it can cause severe health problems on consumers. So an ideal temperature for storing olive oil is 570 Fahrenheit of 140 C. and it can also be refrigerated.

Olive oil expands on heating. This property is considered to be most advantageous for the consumers. Because of this property, the oil can be reused for upto five times and it is safe. But, if olive oil is combined with other kinds of oil while cooking, it is said to produce certain toxins which can cause serious damage to health.

OATS CHARACTERISTICS

oats2

Oats are nutritious whole foods which are widely used now a days mainly because of its high nutritive content which is the result of least processing or no refining at all. Oats are foods which is full of proteins and help is body buiding. Oat is a cereal grain that usually has a bland taste. Oat comes in many different forms.  Oats provide soluble fiber (called beta glucan) which acts like a sponge during digestion, soaking up and removing cholesterol from the body.

Commonly known as oats, its scientific name is Avena sativa. One of the major uses of oats is, it is used as a feed for livestocks. It is used also for human consumption as oat mean or rolled oats which has many health benefits. Oats are also used in many brands of dog and chicken feed.

Oats, like any other varieties of grains, belong to the Graminae family. Oats are excellent source of soluble dietary fibre. They are derived from natural whole grain. Oats'quality is enhanced further, by mixing it with Oat Bran.

It is believed that oats originated in Bronze Age Europe and since then being used as a staple food for both human consumption and feeding of the livestock. The outer casing of the oat is called the oat bran and it is believed to lower LDL cholesterol levels in blood.  Oat is the only cereal containing globulin, legume-like protein, avenalin as the major storage protein in it. It is present about 80% in it. Oats are sown in spring or in early summer.

OATS AS DIETARY FIBERS

oats

Oats contain more soluble fibres than any other grain. Because of this there is a complete and slower digestion with extended sensation of fullness, reduces constipation. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has finalized its rule expanding the sources of oat beta glucan soluble fibre that can carry the health claim for lower risk of heart diseases.

It is said that half cup of oat bran gives 4.4g of dietary fibres required by the body. Soluble fibers, like oats, reduce cholesterol by interfering with the absorption of bile acids in the intestine causing them to be excreted rather than being taken up into the blood stream. Since bile acids are made from LDL, "bad" cholesterol in the body then removes LDL cholesterol from the blood and takes it to the liver in order to make new bile acids to replace those lost in the stool.

They are often added in to baked goods such as biscuits, cereal bars and flapjacks and can also be used to make a non dairy milk substitute. The soluble fibre which is very important for the body for digestion is not obtained in good amount especially in children because they will go for fast foods instead of healthy vegetables. A cup of oat meal a day will substitute not only the dietary fibres required but also gives lot of vitamins, minerals, calcium, magnesium and other micro nutrients. The fibers of oat also help in protecting vision of our eyes. Its mainly because of the purification of blood.

aloe

Aloe vera is one of the oldest and well known medicinal plant gifted by nature, which is often referred to as 'The Miracle plant'. Since many years, the plant is being used in the treatment of various diseases and also used in beauty products. There are about 200 varieties of the plant, but only 4 or 5 of them are used in medicinal field.

Botanical name: Aloe vera

Common name: Aloe, Indian aloe, Curacao aloe

Parts used: Leaves (especially the gel inside it)

Origin: No exact origin is known but many researchers say that it is probably originated from Northern Africa. Now widely spread in Europe, America and India.

Aloe vera is a plant with no stem or with a short stem. The edges of the leaves are thorny but not sharp enough to hurt and make one bleed. If the leaves are dissected horizontally, a colourless gel is obtained which has got many medicinal properties. The plant grows from 1 to 4 feet height and the maximum grown plant contains more than 35 fleshy leaves each about 15-25cm or even more than that. The corrugated lining containing the bitter juice, most commonly referred to as the latex has laxative properties. Since the leaves are very fleshy, to protect it from easy ruptures, a protective covering by name 'Rind' is present on the leaf. Hence the plant is safe always from any pest attacks. Sap, a layer of bitter fluid protects the plant from other animals.

The mucilaginous gel of Aloe vera contains about 8 amino acids. These are either not manufactured in human body or manufactured in very less amount. Oral consumption of these gel will substitute the nutritional requirement and helps in maintenance of good health.
