Outstanding quality, consistency and accuracy! At the end of the day that is all you can ask from a blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer). A few things to bear in mind: In consecutive readings done at the same time, you will see a trend from higher to lower blood pressure as you "learn" to lower your own pressure. Also, your blood pressure at home will be lower than that you obtain at your doctor's office until you learn to overcome the anxiety normally associated with the doctor's office. This is normal and is one of the main reasons to obtain a home blood pressure monitor. Also, your pressure will fluctuate from day to day and even during a blood pressure monitoring session.

Let me give you an example: My heart rate is anywhere from 52 to 58. As the blood pressure cuff deflates your systolic pressure is the first pulse that the unit detects. The cuff pressure deflates 5-10 mm between each heart beat. So, depending on the timing of your pulse, your pressure reading will fluctuate approximately 5-10 mm systolic and diastolic. When your pressure is taken manually the operator can regulate the rate of deflation of the cuff so as to reduce the measurement error. So don't automatically assume that the gauge is not giving accurate readings! Trust me, it is.

This monitor has been extensively tested against measurements obtained at the doctor's office and has been determined to be as accurate a method of determining blood pressure as you would obtain at the doctor's office - actually, more accurate since the anxiety factor is eliminated.

For some reason, when I purchased this item, it was cheaper than the Omron HEM-780, so purchasing it was a no brainer! I saved . Is it worth a little more than the HEM-780? It does have a few more bells and whistles including the software. But it is essentially the same unit. If you think you'd use the software which is kind of slick then by all means get this unit rather than the 780. Personally, I would definitely pay MORE, now that I have it and have used it, for this unit. The software if very helpful in keeping your BP records. Otherwise, the units are nearly identical in producing consistent accurate results.

So if you are looking for the best home blood monitor device on the market look no further. Just realize that there are minor variances in the readings attributable to fluctuations in your blood pressure and slight measurement error. I would also recommend the unit with the software - this can come in very handy in tracking your BP and its fluctuations. It also can provide you with a printed record of your readings for your doctor.

I like it - it works. The software keeps track - but the software needs work.

I wrote to the company - there are several issues:

1. There's no way to edit the data. With two users it's easy to not have the right one selected when you take a reading. After uploading, the only way to edit the data is to export to Excel, edit, erase the database and then import the corrected data.

2. It's stored in an Access database, but it's password protected - why?

3. The user cannot direct where the database is kept, it's in the Programs folder on the OS drive.

The easy to apply cuff, auto inflation, its accuracy, the memory, the averaging feature, the AC converter all make it worth the slightly higher price over other Omrons, which I consider the most accurate brand. I got this monitor to keep track of my blood pressure so that I could give the printed reports to my doctor. I have one that I got from Sharper Image that is easy to use but you can't upload readings to a computer. The one from Sharper Image was also not very accurate when compared to using a regular doctor grade cuff with a stethoscope. The Omron monitor is much easier to use than the Sharper Image one, is easier to ensure the proper position and the uploading of the readings is very easy. I took the Omron monitor to my doctor to have her calibrate it against her measurements and the Omron monitor was nearly identical. Based on that and the printed reports, I was taken off my blood pressure medication!

I really like the way it measures the blood pressure AS it pumps up so it never pumps up higher than it needs to to get a pressure reading. Many other BP Monitors pump up to 160-180 then measure the pressure as it bleeds off the air.

To the Engineers: I'd like to see the next model have a wireless way to transfer the data. I travel which is why I bought a compact monitor. My laptop case has too many cables already and now I have another one. Consider WiFi, Bluetooth, SD card. Also a backlit display would be nice. I would pay more for these features.

As a former Biomed tech that tested and repaired 100's of BP Monitors I can say with some authority that this is a winner.

Being a person who hasn't ever joined a gym, I never knew stuff like this existed. I was very interested in this item because I've been walking for exercise but wasn't really sure I was reaching my target heart rate consistently.

The monitor, which displays the time as well as your heart rate on a watch, works in conjuction with a gizmo that you strap around yourself, just under your chest. (I will tell you, since I was concerned about this, that it's hardly noticeable once it's in place...it's a 12" or so long piece of plastic with an adjustable elastic strap...not very bulky at all!) The monitor also features a stopwatch and an alarm, so that after you set your minimum & maximum desired heart rates, you can be alerted when you are out of range. The alarm is a "beep-beep" that I can hear over the book on tape I drag along with me. Your heart rate is updated every second or two so you will always know if you need to pick up the pace a bit.

Although I have not yet had to do so, the chest strap has a removable backing, and you apparently can change the battery yourself (this is a big deal, I guess, since some of the more expensive monitors require that you send them to the factory for a battery change). The elastic strap is also completely removable, which makes it very easy to wash (and you will need to if you're exercising!).

The monitor comes packaged in a small, zippered carrying case, and includes an attachment that allows you to place it on a bicycle handlebar.

This does everything I need it to, and I recommend it for anyone who is just getting started in an exercise program.

I think this is an excellent pedometer -- it does the job well and accurately. It counts your steps whether it is clipped on, in your pocket or in a purse. The auto-reset to zero at midnight helps keep you honest. Like the software - a couple of clicks and your data is automatically uploaded. It shows your results on a daily, weekly, monthly,and annual basis. Omron is the only company I have seen that provides you with software.

I think the manual that comes with the device could be slightly improved but here are some tips that may help you with setting it up and using it for the first time:

(1) With the back cover off, make note of the serial number. It is engraved into the case in tiny letters near the bottom. It is a six character mix of letters and numbers. You'll need this for registration later.

(2) Before starting to configure your pedometer, you will need to calculate the length of your stride. Pick a starting point and walk 10 regular steps. Measure the distance in inches and divide by 10. Make a note of the result to use later.

(3) In the software, I suggest setting modest "daily goals" to start. Adjust your goals up or down anytime through the software's Options menu as you get use to the pedometer.

(4) The "Set" button on the front is smaller than the others and is intended to be used occasionally to reset the time, your weight, etc. as needed - it does not reset or delete your step data. As a good practice, upload your pedometer data regularly as a backup. In the unlikely event that the "Set" button is accidently pressed , just press "Set" another 4 or 5 times and you'll come back to your normal "step" screen.

(5) Step count - this pedometer shows total steps (both aerobic and regular steps)in the "step" count screen. To see only the aerobic steps accomplished for the day, go to the next screen. It keeps a separate count for aerobic steps (60 steps or more per minute continuously for 10 minutes or longer).

(6) While you can view the last 7 days of step data on the device itself, it actually holds up to 42 days in memory. All data is viewable once uploaded to your pc.

I have not used pedometers much, but really like this unit for a number of reasons. First, it is quite compact and can comfortably fit in a pocket and not feel bulky (you can wear with a clip too or hang it from a cord off a belt). Second, it really seems to accurately count steps. I tried it a few times by counting 50 or 100 steps with the unit in my pocket and it seems to be right on target as a step counter. To measure distance, I walked a 100 feet a couple of times to set my stride. With the stride in place, the distance measure seems pretty accurate. I walked a known distance (about a mile and a half) and then looked at both the step count and distance. The distance was a little short, which meant I needed to make a slight adjustment to the value of the stride. I made the same walk again and got the calculated distance was exactly on target.

Conclusion: This is an accurate pedometer in terms of counting steps and estimating distance.

I also really like the software. You simply attach the pedometer to your computer (I have a a PC with XP) and the data then download. You can look at your total number of steps by day (or hour within the day), the number of steps at an aerobic rate (defined as part of walking ten minutes or more at a stretch), and distance walked. There are also estimates of calories burned and grams of fat lost, based on you weight and age -- I have no idea if these are accurate. As a nice feature, you can look at all statistics by day, week, or month.

The software is very easy to use and as bonus also interfaces with some of Omron's blood pressure unit.

I have really enjoyed using this pedometer in that I can slip it into my pocket in the morning (and am glad it doesn't take up much room) and then look at my step count for the day. I have given myself a daily target (10000 steps) and am now finding myself doing more things to get in extra steps each day -- parking further from my destination, walking a bit further to pick up for lunch, or just treating myself to a 10-15 minute walk during my workday. These things add up and now I have a sense of what all I need to do during the day to reach my step goal.

You pay a bit extra (not that much) for a pedometer with many features, including the software. I suppose you could save a few dollars by not getting a version with the software, but for me, being able to easily track progress is one of the best things about this pedometer (can also print out reports, output data to a spreadsheet if you want). It seems to be worth a bit more to have this sort of tracking (though I do wish they had sotware for Macintosh computers!).

Highly recommended!

I was looking for a device that would be easy for my 88 year-old mother to use on her own. She was told to monitor her blood pressure, but can't use the public style because they are set to test the left arm. Because of prior surgery, her left arm can't be used. So, when looking for the wrist type, this monitor had all the qualities I was looking for. When we received it and showed Mom how to use it, she found it easy to use and easy to read because the screen uses large print. She doesn't have to write anything down. She takes it to her doctor and he can read back through the last 90 days (one reading per day). Because she has an occasional problem with ventricular tachycardia, the monitor also lets her know if the heart is beating irregularly with a simple picture. The cuff beeps when you have it positioned properly for inflation. This isn't a function that is useful for Mom, because she is hard of hearing. But, fortunately, the beep isn't really necessary because positioning is easy for everyone--fingertips on your shoulder. I have recommended this monitor to everyone. I am a dental hygienist and frequently have to monitor blood pressure readings on my patients. I bought one for use at my office. It is quite accurate according to my patients. So I've found nothing negative about this product.

I need to take my blood pressure at least a couple of times a day. I have been using the OMRON 773-AC Omron HEM-773-AC Blood Pressure Monitor which is a full-size, table top system, with an upper-arm cuff. It works fine, but is large to pack on a trip.

I got this wrist unit to travel with, and it's amazing. First, the results agree to within a point or two with the big unit (which in turn agrees well with measurements at the doctor's office). So, it's consistently accurate.

Second, it's cool to use - at least for gadget freaks. You fasten it to your wrist, turn it on, and it starts beeping. Holding the elbow of the arm with the device on it with the opposite hand, you start raising your wrist toward your heart. As you near the right location, the beeping gets faster, and when you are right on, the machine starts running. You just hold it there for a bit until it stops running, and you're done. Works every time.

It's actually easier to take BP with this machine than with the big one, so you give up nothing by going to the small system.

Third, it's nice and small - easy to pack away in a suitcase.

My only gripe is that the memory holds only one set of readings, and my wife and I both use it - it's handy to have two memories, as the big system does. But we can separate by values, and it all works out.

It's always good to see technology applied successfully, and OMRON seems to have done it in this case. It's a winner.

I had been using an Omron HM 780 for about two years and had nothing against it except for the fact the arm- cuff is thick and rigid and never seemed to get really tight around my thin arm.

Although the 712C model does not have as many features as the 780 one, it warns of the all-important irregular heart beat. Many of the features of the 780 I don't feel I need.

I compared readings from the two models and they were very close, but I feel more comfortable with the 712C's flexible arm-cuff. The maximum circumference of your arm for this unit is 13 inches so if your arm is muscular or heavy you will not be able to use this cuff. Be sure to select the box for the 9" to 13" cuff as you will pay much more for the larger cuff which is also available.

The 712C model is very reasonable in price, some .00 less than the 780, so if it can accommodate your arm and if you don't need all the advanced features I heartily recommend it over the more expensive one.

One caveat: the 712C does not come with an AC adapter or the required four AA batteries. I was able to use the adapter from the 780 set, but the unit will run fine on the batteries alone.

The Omron 712C is a very nice unit at a remarkably low price. Just bear in mind that the low price is for the smaller cuff only.
